Need help turn key to start boat motor starts let go of key motor stops anyone know the problem, thanks

It would be very helpful to know what engine and year. However based on what you said I’ll guess it’s a 1998 or newer with a carburetor. This would have an electric fuel pump that gets power from the starter solenoid when starting but once running power comes from an oil pressure switch. Most likely the switch is bad.

If you're holding the key the engine isn't starting. You are simply spinning the engine with the starter.
