Default Trailer brakes

I want to put brakes on my trailer. I am clueless when it comes to trailer brakes. I have a 97 maxum 1700sr so I would guess that when loaded it would be around 3500-4000lbs. I am towing with a 05 xterra. What brakes would be best for me?

My vote is disc brakes with a surge actuator. Have a local trailer shop do it if you are uncertain of how to install.

I got my brake system from etrailer.com. You will probably need to know what kind of spindle you have, though most of the brake systems will work for any spindle setup. Installation was no problem. I have the surge actuator with disk brakes and it works great. I don't have a backing actuator and have learned to live without it, but I would recommend it to you since you are buying new system.
