Default Tool Idea

As a newby I've found it's easier to descend into the bowels of an engine compartment than to ascend. So, I hot glued an earth magnet onto the outside claw of an extendable grabber I bought at a $1 store. We'll see if it helps.

Not clear to me how you plan to use this to help ascend.

LOL!!!!!

I was thinking that it's not restricted to 'newbies'. I've been doing this for many, many years and I still find myself subject to the laws of gravity.

I suspect this is for dropped screws, bolts, nuts and sockets. Since these items are typically Stainles Steel, will that magnet work?

I should have been clearer. I plan to use this tool to grab the junk that others have dropped in the bilge over time. That way I won't have to try and reach down, get stuck and expect my wife to drag me out with a come-along thus giving her ammunition when she and her friends are trading "you won't believe what my husband did" stories...but I digress. (I'll soon find out if it works on stainless steel screws etc.)

Kind of thought that's what it was for but you did not mention picking things up other than yourself.
