Default Silly question... but got to ask

We are sea trialing a 2000 Maxum 4100 SCA with twin cummins. Our curiousty has us asking, what should we expect of the cummins versus fuel burn of a 454 Mercruiser??? :

The diesel will burn less fuel, however this is true only when comparing them in the same hull or at least similar size.

Thanks Mike, comparing to our Carver 355, similiar in many ways but the 4100 has a 10,000 pound "advantage".

Don,

Cruising the ICW here in Florida (Same boat, two Cummings 6BTA 5.9 M3, 330HR)... usually running around 9 kts at just over 2,000RPM (not on plane) with routine slow/no wake/manatee/bridges zones. Average just under 8kts and burn at ~1.26 gal/nm or 9.72 gal/hr.

Thanks Paul,
Our old Carver 355 with 454's sucked 13 gph at 12kts- calm seas. Our 4100 of course is displacing a tad more. Any optimum open water consumption rates would be equally useful if you can share.

Sorry Don, just not enough open water runs at that speed to make a good average for you.
