Default Shore power cords

Took my boat out for a spin yesterday and when I disconnected my shore power cords I noticed that they were very sticky. Looks like a black crud growing on them. I have bought cord cleaning before and didnt work at all.

I have two of them for my 01 3000 scr and these are around 5 years old. I'm curious what causes this ? The obvious..the sun ...is it breaking down the cords yellow rubber cover? Other than being sticky to the touch they are fine. No tears either .

What's going on here or is this just a natural process with being exposed to the elements outside and I replace them with new ones?

Roger

Roger, what brand are the cords? I’ve not seen this on name brand one.

Yup they make good cords. Is there a product that you have been using to clean them that made had attacked the jacket material?

They make a cord cleaner which I have used a long time ago and didn't work very well. I was on u tube and there was a video of someone using a razor blade and scrapping the crud off. Lol . So I think the elements are doing something to these cords being exposed 24/7.

Your guess is as good as mine on this one.

Thank Mike... I can't believe other boaters don't have this same problem. All of the cleaning remedies seem so labor intensive. Oh well ... have a beer Roger lol

Being that my Maxum is on a lift I haven’t used shore power. Now that I have my Silverton not sure if I’ll use it but had a power pedestal installed on my pier.

I have one cord that is turning more brown than yellow and is a bit 'sticky' feeling.
When it gets gross enough, I'm going to replace it.

Roger, I have the same issue, but like you no solution. I haven't seen any deterioration in the conductivity of the cable itself, and think it's merely an astatic problem, and like you, I rather the cable be nice and yellow, not black.

Paul ....thanks for the vote of confidence. I hope you mean aesthetic. It feels like I'm handling an old licorice stick that's been out in the sun to long.

One, I can't spell to begin with, and two, typing on a phone's keypad doesn't help - but yes - aesthetic it is

There is no 'fat finger' shaming here, nor do we grade on spelling here at MOC.

Now.....abuse of capitalization, bold, or egregious lack of punctuation is another story. LOL!!!

Not to beat this to death here but the word Paul typed in was "astatic ". Which means unstable or if used as a physics term something to do with magnets. Another fun fact . Please bury this thread!

I was only joking. But that is a fun bit of semantics.
