Default prop...pitch and size?

Hey All,
I just purchased a 1993 Maxum...17' 3" bowrider...3.0 liter...135 hp...runabout. I'm trying to figure out the best prop to pull a skier...tuber...and overall performance. Any ideas on what one works best for that boat? I don't want to try out 3 or 4 props to get the best "fit"...if I can avoid it. Thanks.....mhavinfun

what prop do you have now??..the main thing is to make sure your not out of spec. when wot...wide open throttle.....you should be about 4200-4800rpm...if you change prop and are out of that spec...then your defeating the purpose....so...with that said...1" pitch change will change wot by 200 rpm either way...so..if you have a 21" pitch prop..a 4600rpm and change to a 19" pitch..that will drop you to 5000rpm and your out of WOT spec.....but the change will allow you to pull a bit faster on the plane.....so...you have to weigh it all out.

do you have an al. prop or stainless steel.??...stainless will flex less..give better bite....better response...

Your boat was originally equipped with a 14X19 prop. So, if it hasn’t been changed you can see what your WOT RPMs are now and adjust the size of the prop to stay in the safe operating range.

The trade off is always less top end speed for a better hole shot.

Also, realize that your speed at idle, as you load on a trailer or maneuver around the dock will change with a different prop.

On my Maxum with the 3.0L and the 14.5x19 prop I get to about 5200prm at wot. Is there a rev limiter that would prevent me from overrevving and doing damage to the engine? If not, I would need to go up in pitch to bring the RPMs down, right? Perhaps a 21 to get into the proper range?

Is 14.5 X 19 your factory installed prop? The max RPMs should be in the 4400-4800 range.
Usually they are almost over propped with from the factory for safety. I think you would be better off with a 14 ¼ X 21.

I don’t know if there are rev. limiters on 2008 models.

This is the prop that came on it from the dealer but when it was in the showroom there was no prop so I don't know what was on it from the factory.

According to the Maxum website, your boat should have come with this prop.

Part #: 1699431 PROP, ALUM 14 1/4" X 21" I/O

I would tell the dealer to put the correct prop on. It should not cost you anything to get the correct one.

Actually, I misspoke because I broke the original prop and had to have SeaTow deliver a new one on the water. The one they brought me is a 14.5x19 which is what the book at the shop it came from said I needed, but apparently the one from the dealer is the 21p. I assumed the one I got on the water was the same one that came on the boat.

Mine is much worse than that. I broke one blade completely off. There's less than 1/2" left. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow.
