Default Perplexed

I recently purchased a ‘98 2700SCR, and have no real idea what this is for. I’m referring to the small rectangle sunken compartment in the Engine Hatch below the rear seat.
Someone please let me know.
Thanks

Place foe a cooler so it doesn’t slide around?

Maybe, but it’s narrow and has a drain hole in each of the rear corners with drain tubes that go down into the engine compartment and out the Port and Starboard sides of the boat.

From the 1997 brochure. Note cooler under cockpit.

The scuppers are to drain water from the cockpit deck. In my 2800, I had one in each stern corner. In this case, the cooler holder would become a pool.

I tell guests to put their shoes in there when they get on board, not its intended use but works well
