Default Opinions needed....blowers

Ok here goes.....I am deathly afraid of engine room fumes and run my blower constantly before start and during running. I have a 3200 SCR with twin 7.4's and a factory quicksilver genset. To add to my fear the motors are carbed. I am very versed in the streetrod stuff and want to have efi so bad...blower upgrade will be cheaper...and engines run great at my 450ft elevation. I feel the need to "upgrade" my blower. I want something quieter and the most cfm. I have not really got to dig into the "squirrel cage" blowers yet....need advise from any and all maxum boaters!!! Tell me your upgrades or thoughts on what direction you would go...thanks in advance "big max"!!!!

If it makes you feel better, get the largest, ignition protected blower with the highest CFM you can find. Keep in mind that the blower is not going to prevent a fuel leak. Avoiding storing fuel, including jerry cans, portable generator's and outboards with onboard fuel storage or OB fuel tanks is your best bet. Frequently inspect fuel systems and carbs for leaks. I doubt there is a need to run the blowers non-stop. Blowers are not specific to Maxum.

the smell of raw gas is good!

Like natural gas odor in your house, gasoline is made with a odor to alert you of a problem.

So, If you don't smell anything with out the blower..... is the best way to be.

Running the blower 5 min before starting will air exchange your engine compartment 100 times over, but will never prevent a fire.

Gasoline is most dangerous when you can't smell any fumes, because the gas and air are mixed into the perfect mixture.

When the engines are running, the air intake puts the engine compartment under negative pressure, and the air exchange rate is more then 1000 times the blower.

The problem is..... if you had a fire or even smoke, your want zero air movement, so you don't feed the flames with air.

So, then engines go off, and the blower stays off.

A fire will burn out usually without air supply, and full gas in your tank will not blow up, because its sealed with little air in it.

there are 1000 electrical sparks in your boat, from the spark plugs, to the light switches, as long as the fuel supply is sold, and you don't smell or see drips, your safe as can be.

if you want more protection, you can install a fire suppression system , like hot rod cars, then pop off automatically, and open the extinguisher, in the event of smoke or flame.

Scentry Gas Vapor Detector, Complete with Sending Unit and Instructions

I always bought two of everything for my boat so I'd have a spare. I gave up boating and sold my boat.

These are excellent safety instruments, always used one of these and this was a spare, never used

Rule of thumb is to run your blower for no less than 4 minutes before you start your engines. That is an easy one. Just a quick openning of the hatch and using the ole nose for a tester will also work before starting the engines. Add another blower by installing it an the other side of the engine room. Opposite of the other blower. There is really no need to run the blower when the boat is moving unless just wanting to move the hot air out of the engine. There is enough air movement going in and out of the engine room when moving.

Hope this helps

Roger
