Default Newbie considering 1998 19' SRL

Hi everyone,
I need your advice regarding a 1998 Maxim 19' SRL for $5500. I am new to boating and am not mechanically inclined. Here's the ad I am looking at:

"This is a low hour 3.0 bowrider I.O. Full canvas and spotless seats. Recently overhauled outdrive lifts, replaced water pump, new fuel pump, alcohol flushed fuel tank, replaced water separator, rebuilt carburetor, replaced gimbal bearing in outdrive and replaced new side curtains and bow cover. New retractable emergency oar and large selection of life vests."

I called a marina and asked if they would look it over and I was willing to pay the going rate for inspection. They said, "No, we don't know you." That's the strangest thing I have ever heard. Nonetheless, should I have a mechanic or marine surveyor go to where the boat is located?

Finally, I need to know the draft on the boat. My house is on a river and the tide gets pretty low (about 2 feet).

Any advice is greatly needed, even if it's not a good idea to buy this boat.

Thanks everyone!

Welcome aboard

A survey would be the way to go but for the price you could just use a good friend who knows boats if you have one.

For this size boat the things to look at are soft spots on the deck and transom plus engine condition. A basic survey does little to check the engine. I guess the best money would be to hire a mechanic to inspect the engine and drive.
