Hi all new to the forum, I just purchased my first personal boat a 1994 maxum 1800 xr with the 120 force motor,
She's in great condition had motor redone so she runs like new, I just purchased a new mercury 4 hp 4 stroke kicker motor, my question is "what is the best mounting on the 1800 xr's?" Not enough room on the transom with the 120 sitting there, port side looks like the best spot but do I mount face in or on top (with backing plate). Has anyone mounted to this type of boat, I also want to add a steering rod connected to force steering. Thanks

I can't say I have ever seen a kicker mounted to the side of a boat. Issues I see with doing so are no structure to mount bracket, you would n to add a stiffner plate inside to spread the load weight. The weight of the kicker will make the boat of this size lean that way. When running the kicker it's thrust will be way off the boats center line making steering difficult.
Since I don't know this boat I can't give the best answer but it it can be mounted on the transom to one side ofthethe main power and connected with a steering arm will it move enough that it stays out of the way ofthe main power as it swings side to side.
You may want ask your local OB installer this question.
Thanks Mike,
What I meant was the rear left next to motor, there is a outcropping where the battery sits inside but plenty of room for a mounting plate, here is a pic of the rear, just wondered if anyone has done this
Cheers

Got it. Going to have yo see if anyone responds. None the less this area would probably need yo be reinforced for the bracket to handle the load of the kicker
