The depth finder on my 2400 SC3 is a thru hull type.

There are pros and cons for each type. Only reason I asked which type the HDS5 comes with is to alert Cymru that the boat might have to come out of the water to install.

I didn't mention the thru hull types cuz I figured he wouldn't want to install it..they are more expensive than the others and require some hull treatments..such as sealing the wood in the hole...and some serious sealing around the thru hull..plus the right torque to the snubbing nut......then there is the chance that it will fail and sink the boat if improperly installed....

Looks like either the skimmer or the pod type can be mounted in the boat. Naturally, anytime one can avoid putting holes in the boat all the better.

If you can find a spot for it far enough back towards the transom to ensure that part of the hull is in the water while on plane I'd likely go with the shoot thru mounting option. For reference, the factory installed depth finder T/D on my boat (thru hull type) is mounted just forward of the engine.

Although they are calling for epoxy, I wonder if there's some other substance that you could use to temporarily mount it, allowing you to try different locations before commiting with the epoxy. Perhaps something like modeling clay. May be a completely unnecessary exercise if the perfect spot already exists.

SP,

I cannot agree with you more regarding the darned placement of the VHF. Where did you mount the speaker?

so....get a ram z mount and mount the thing similar to where I put my fish finder on my old boat...works great...easy to do...and it will hold the head where you can take it off when you put the boat away or you are docked someplace......

then get a speaker for that danged radio....can't hear that thing when it's near your knee either...plus that quarter sized speaker sucks....
