Default Generator Issue - HELP

OK guys, in preparation for our first long weekend, I tested the generator at the slip. In the 9 months I have owned this boat, I have had the generator on 3 times, just to test it basically. I have always noticed that it runs smooth as silk, then sputters/runs rough for a while, then comes back. I assumed this was normal (Kohler 800 I believe).

Yesterday, I fired it up while running the AC wide open, a TV, a fan, and the stereo. The generator would run smooooth, the start coughing and back firing - sometimes sputtering for quite a while, then it smooooth out again. This kept going on and on. Then I took the load off and it went back to smooth followed by the rough/rattly period.

I really need it in tact for our long trip. Any suggestions??? The gen. set has been rarely used!

Thanks!!!

:hello:

bad filter...change it out or clean out the bowl on the bhd where the water sep. is....then run it..it gets the same fuel as your main engine plant does....so...the only option is the filter and the water sep....

Thanks guys! I have to apologize for lack of knowledge, but SP - are you saying there is a filter specific to the generator? If so, where is it located? I can not figure out what "bhd" stands for ops: .

The water seperator/filter on the boat engine has been replaced very recently. The fuel in the tank is fresh, but the generator was never run often at all. When it was run previously, it still had the periods of rough operation under test runs and VERY light loads.

Thanks guys, I will be on board next weekend and ready to tear into it, please clarify so I can find these pieces and parts

One other thing for the Maxum, the gen. exhaust comes out the side above the water line. I was a bit surprised to see what I assume to be coolant water coming out at the same time... is that correct??? It seemed the exhaust was pushing water out of the exhaust port and the water was warm/hot.

Thanks again.

Yes the water is supposed to be coming out, it cools the gen and the exhaust system, it also helps silence the exhaust noise.
