This could certainly be the case. On the transom assembly of my old Bravo III, the transom plate slowly 'grew' corrosion that crushed the intake hose passing through the transom assembly.
Installing a through-hull, seacock and sea strainer will resolve this issue.
185 is 'ok'. Engine should go into protection around 195-200. Water boils at 212. i'd prefer to be riding squarely at 175.
