Default AC raw water hose replacement

1998 Maxum 2800 scr

While winterizing our maxum I noticed cracking in the raw water pump hose for the AC. obviously this is a concern and I want to replace all the hoses in the spring.
two questions.
1. what type of 5/8" hose should I use.
2. I have a plastic one way inline valve in the hose (see pic). Is that needed?

thanks,
Mark

Wow, good catch! My maxum had just 5/8” clear braided/reinforced vinyl hose. Never was really thrilled that something below the waterline wasn’t beefier, but it held for 20 years without any sign of wear. I always closed the seacock when leaving for an extended period.

Mine did not have any type of check valve and I think it was the same pump. I suspect that may have been installed so that the pump wouldn’t lose prime when the boat is taken out of the water. I always had to bleed the air from the pump after the boat was launched.

I did more research and believe the one way check valve is to keep the pump primed.
Now just need to verify what type of hose. I can prob verify that at West Marine store if I don't get a reply.
thanks,
Mark

Thanks for the reply. I'm docked 5 months of the year (NE Ohio on Lake Erie) so keeping it primed makes sense. I'm also concerned with anything below the water line and should have replaced this sooner before it showed signs of failing

i'm also now looking for a 5/8" barbed brass check valve to replace the plastic one. nothing on a search so far.

The check valve isn’t OEM but I understand the principle to hold water between it and the pump. This only makes sense to me if the boat is lift kept where the inlet can drain down.

Good to know. I wasn't thinking it could only unprimed if out of the water. I'd rather eliminate a piece a plastic under the water line.
thanks for the reply.
