Default About to buy a maxum 2400 SE

Hi all

Im new to the forum, Danny, from the UK.....

Just about to potentially dive into the world of finally having my own boat for the family. I have seen a 2000 Model Year Maxum 2400SE that fits the bill perfectly, Im a boat mechanic and I work offshore but i am not familiar with the Mercruiser 5.0L V8 MPI which the boat is fitted with. Unfortunatey all I know about it so far is that it had a Leg rebuild in 2022 and was last serviced in June of 2024.....

I will be sea trialling it when i get home and if i buy it the current owner has offered to sail it back Plymouth with me, which I would imagine he is confident in its mechanical condition.

Just thought I would pick your brains on any weak points this model has and typical flaws to look out for. How reliable the engines are? (obviously depends on previous maintenance) but just in general, Im not fussed about fuel consumption (I kknow it will drink it)

Im more interested in condition of the outdrive, Risers, Manifolds (expensice stuff)

Any information would be welcomed.

Thanks In advance

Danny

Welcome aboard!

The 5.0 is a GM engine that is marinized, very common in the US. If the exhaust components are raw water cooled (these will be either raw water or closed cooled) and used in salt water they typically only last around 5 years. I recommend using a IR heat sensor to take readings of the engine and exhaust components. Other than that no special concerns that any boat of this age may have.
