Default 2400SE bow and aft thrusters

Hi all,
Just finishing my first awesome year with a 2003 2400se (5.0mpi bravo3). It's been great. Did a lot of preventative maintenance on it.

The boat has a trolling motor thruster in the front, and the back. The front one is lowered into place manually, and the rear has a switch to deploy it which works. Now, i am beginning to want to get it working again. It would be a huge help getting into some tight spots I operate in. Especially when it's windy.

They never worked. The guy I bought it from says it was working until recently. There is a third battery slot which is missing the battery. The switches on the dashboard... when I hit left or right for the front or the rear switch, I can hear a relay clicking. Yesterday I put a 12v Deep cycle 27 series battery in there. When I click the switches, I still just get a relay click and nothing more. On the engine room port wall there are some fuses, one of which is labelled thruster, but it is still fine.

I did find this video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/V4sKOkdfT6E
I want to do that!

What is this factory option even called?
Does this system use a 12v battery?

is it possible the relay while clicking is broken?

BTW, love this site. Thanks to the contributors.

chris

Did some more poking around today. First, here is a picture of the third battery spot and some sort of solenoid/relay i wired into it:

There are a number of switches for this stuff on the dashboard. It appears there is a master Thruster on switch that lights up when toggled. I am guessing that toggle opens the solenoid in the picture above the third battery slot I put the black battery in.

There is a left and right toggle for the forward and the rear thruster. When i click left or right on the forward thruster, i am hearing a relay clicking. I now realize it is coming from in front of the steering wheel, probably behind the refrigerator. The aft toggle switch is clicking relay from somewhere else along the port side of the boat.

I tried measuring voltage at the wires at the bow. It's a detachable plug. I wasn't getting any voltage there. I'm thinking i need to see if the solenoid in the picture is activating. I am not hearing any click there. And i guess i'll pull the fridge again and see if there is any voltage there next.

My battery charger had a third set of terminals sitting in that third battery spot. I did plug that in after that photo. So i'm guessing that the battery for this is indeed supposed to be 12v.

Can you post some pictures of the actual thrusters? What you described for the bow thruster doesn’t sound OEM. See link for previous thread on this topic.

I will have to take pictures of the rear motor and the dashboard switches later. But here is a picture of the front motor pulled up.

The front motor is manually pushed down into the socket and plugged into a plug underneath the white chain opening.

The rear motor is the same, but it is mounted to a pedestal just under the port corner swim platform. It has a motorized extension switch located where the rear shower is on most other boats. That motor is always plugged in.

The video i linked in my first post... you can see the pole extended down. And also the one in the back is down but a little hard to see perhaps.

This is definitely not a OEM installation. With the additional pictures I should be able to help you get it working.

In looking at the picture of the third new battery I noticed that both battery cables are black which is bad since you can’t easily identify which one is the positive which leads me to ask are you sure it’s connected correctly?

Hi Mike, I don't know which wire goes to which battery terminal. I tried it both ways. Turned on the dashboard switch that i circled in yellow in this picture:

The two toggles to the left of that circled in red are what makes two different relays click. One for front one for rear. Those don't do anything until the Thruster On switch I circled in yellow.

However, on the battery#3 solenoid, I tried measuring voltage yesterday and got none.
The yellow and block wires bolted to it.... the small triggering black wire and the main black wire sticking out the side bolt on the right of the solenoid go down and to the right. The yellow wire goes left toward the other wiring blocks. But to my dismay i found that it was simply spliced into two other random black wires with a big yellow butt joint seen below:

I can't see where those black wires it is spliced into goes. But it doesn't go into that fuze behind it labelled Thrust. BTW, any ideas what the fuse labelled "T TAE" might stand for?

Another thing that has me worried, is that the battery#3 solenoid only has 3 main wires (and the two activating wires). All three are black. Two were dangling with ring connectors that i connected to the battery. Then there's one more big black wire. Wouldn't there need to be 4 big wires to match up with the two going to the battery#3? Maybe there was another one that got pulled, ugh.

BTW, here's a pic of the rear thruster in the up position. The switch to raise it is in the panel next to the door.

I should have gotten into this sooner. I'm taking the boat out on Sunday.

Hi Cris, attached is a picture of the OEM switch panel for the 2400. Yours has been modified to control trolling motors for the purpose of thrusters. This is going to require much more investigation to figure it out. The switch for lowering the rear thruster is in what was the transom shower control. Your about an hour away from me and if you would like I could meet you one day in the Spring to see if we can figure it out.

Hi Mike,
I took the boat out and winterized it yesterday. Got a bit sidetracked.

I would very much like it if we could get together in the Spring. Another pair of experienced eyes would definitely help. I'll reach out to you when I get the boat back in the water.

Or you could just remove it all. That is what I would do. It's a kluge.

Removing it all was what I assumed I would do when I bought the boat.
Spending a year with the boat though has taught me that it blows sideways a lot. I back anchor up to a crowded island a lot. It would have made my solo life a lot easier.
Dozens of people ask me about the thing. If it's not hard to fix, I would like to.
