Maple, Oak, Cherry, or other hardwoods will all behave the same. Obviously vinyl would be a different story. I'd be more concerned about teak or teak and holly, as teak sawdust is very dangerous and you need to take some precautions before sanding teak (respirator, no exposed skin, etc).
Standard hardwoods can be readily sanded and finished like a piece of furniture or a floor in a house. (The floor isn't aware of where it's installed).
