Default power steering

I have a 2000 33 ft with twin 5.7 mercs is normal to lose all power steering when the starboard side motor stalls. plus power steering seams tight .

Yes the starboard engine provides the power steering pump pressure and the port side pump is not used.

By tight do you mean stiff? Low steering fluid, stiff steering cable.

I've never looked... How is the port pump plumbed? Is it just a loop back in to itself?

Yes. Need to keep fluid in it so not burn up the bearing.

Custom valving would be required to parallel the two pumps so PS would be available if either engine failed. This is not considered worth the cost vs the probability. Boat should still be steerable at slow speed with some muscle.

Makes for fun docking, but yes, steerable even without it.

Hmm, what about getting longer hoses made, so in an engine failure you can swap to the pump on the working engine... Hmm... <stroking beard>

Possibility the newer steering assist had QDs (quick disconnect) on the hoses.

I think the most important issue is the stalling. Don't worry about PS right now. What are you doing about that?
