New radio/speakers
Hi everyone,
I have just bought a 2001 3300SCR and looking to replace the radio and stock speakers. Just want to get an opinion of the best radio/speaker combination that people found to work well on this boat. Did you have to add more speakers? Have to add an amp? Thanks in advance for the advice.

JL Audio M770 speakers with West Marine WM4000 and 2 RF30 wireless remote controls. I own a 2000 3300SCR and hated the speakers directly behind my guests head on the radar arch. Bought new King Starboard plastic and covered the holes with a solid piece. Moved the speakers to the inside transom down low. I have been really impressed with the M770 speakers. I like bass and they perform great. Been very pleased with this set up and am picky to the "sound" of a stereo. The wireless remotes are also handy.

CGG,
I agree the location of both the radar arch and the cabin speakers are not optimal. where exactly did you move your speakers? Can you post pics? Did you add an amp? Is there a reason you didn't mount a fixed remote to the helm? I was thinking about doing that but still debating it in my head.

Very rarely use the cabin speakers. I cut holes on the transom and put a speaker on each side of the transom door down low. I will post pictures later this week for you. I didn't add an amp as the system is more than loud enough. I like the remote RF30 wireless remote because I am not always sitting at the helm. I just keep one in my pocket so I can make adjustments wherever I am sitting.

Thanks. How did you run the speaker wires? Did you move the radio to a different location? Thanks again for your help.

I installed my new radio in the same cabin spot and took the cabinet apart when you enter cabin. I did need to use a fish tape to run wires to the engine compartment. I was able to squeeze inside cabinet and run wires behind ice maker, and believe me that is not easy for a 240lb man. I mounted 2 6x9 infinity speakers on transom wall and they sound great. I also mounted amp in engine compartment.

I left the radio in the same place. The RF30 will work with the cabin door shut from anywhere in the cockpit area. Since I took the speakers out of the radar arch I just extended the speaker wire from there and ran it to the new home for my speakers on the transom wall. The new spot for the speakers did extend them into the "wells" for fenders. Was careful to make sure I placed the speaker between the fenders.

Thanks CGG! I think that is a great idea. This might be a stupid question but what is the material called that you covered the radar arch hole with? I like the cup holder idea too, looks like a perfect location.

Maybe this is a good place to ask my question, maybe not...
But on my 94 3200 SCR, it seems that the radio receiver is 12 VDC, but the amp is 110 VAC, so while the radio turns on with the batteries, I don't get sound unless the shore power is connected. Does that sound right? Did the factory make that setup or did someone probably install an amp that runs on AC later?

That is a none factory install. Also the amp must be a home unit to require 110 VAC.

Would there have been a factory installed amp or just the radio receiver?

Not 100% certain but I do not think an amp was offered.

I don't believe an amp was offered either. I would remove the 110Vamp and use the built-in amplifier in the head unit. Consider whether you actually need one. You would really only need one if you want to crank tunes when you're running up on plane.

It was probably added because they wanted a sub woofer, which is in that closet as well. There is also a CD changer, which I'm now assuming wasn't factory either.
