Default Considering a 3100 SCR

Hey Guys, we are in the process of upgrading our boat for next season and we are looking at the Maxum 3100 SCR. We previously owned a Sea Ray 215 as our first boat and we are now looking to go a bit bigger to accommodate a family of 5 and still stay withing our modest budget. We've done some looking and it seems the 3100 gives us the biggest bang for the buck. We've looked at the available space compared to the Sea Rays in the same class and the maxum seems to fit us now and possibly further down the line as the kids get a bit older. The 3100 hundred we are looking at is a 2003 with about 350 hours and its a single owner. The boat looks to be well taken care of and is in excellent shape. We haven't done a sea trail as yet (next season) however from what i can tell the only downside is that it does not have a generator. I just wanted to get some feedback from current 3100 owners to get a sense of the pros and cons of this particular model as well as how happy you are or have been with owning one.

Thanks

Welcome aboard Irie308!!! from a 21 ft day boat to a 31 ft cruiser is a big jump, but very, very doable. PRos and cons are dictated more by the number of people using the vessel and how it's being used. Do you plan on anchoring out a lot? If so, no generator may be a big deal. Sure you can run a small potable like I do, but I would much rather have an onboard genny.

Thanks! We would like to anchor out i'm not sure how often we would but having that option would be nice. We have 3 small children so it would be 5 of us. Is it possible or cost effective to retro fit a generator? We could look around for others that come with a generator but this one really appeals to us because it seems to be well taken care of and its the original owner.

Irie308 a generator can be installed in the boat you are looking at. In some cases when these were sold new the factory did not install th generator the dealer did. You may want to call and get a quote on this to add it into the calculating for this boat vs. one with a generator.

I'm buying the same boat with a generator and I was thinking of selling the generator. I would hold off for a while though. I see the generator leaves little room in the engine compartment to work. I go to the beach a lot but see no use for the generator. I would wait and see, do you really need a generator?

Depends on how you use the boat. I travel to other marinas that have power. My trips are only a few hours. I don't think I need one.

Irie308 I just bought a 2004 3100 has gen and a/c love the gen! We anchor out a lot on the lake so gen is great not only to charge batteries, run a/c, microwave but to run the electric range as well. It does make the engine compartment tight and one day I will regret working in there but it can be done.
