I have a 2001 Maxim 2300SC that I just bought and started cleaning and becoming familiar with. There’s a chrome (SS?) “button “ looking thing immediately to the right of the gas cap. What is this? I tried to upload a photo but I don’t think I am doing that correctly. Any ideas? Thanks. Pife

What you're seeing is more than likely the through hull for the fuel tank vent. If there is a holding tank and/or a freshwater tank, there will be through-hull vents for those tanks as well.
