trailer brakes
I have a EZ Loader trailer and was wondering if it has free baching brakes when backing up?
How can I tell if I remove the drums?
And how do I disable this without disabling the brakes?
Any help would be great!
Thanks again!
Don
Note:
I am installing a Electric over Hydraulic brake kit, asI do not like surge brakes, I live and tow in the mountains.
Don

On surge brakes the master cylinder on the tongue should have a pin that you insert to lick out the breaks when backing. The brakes themself do not have any mechanism for this.

Check your drums against the picture at the link below. It explains free backing brakes. Make sure your truck has the wiring for the electric brake controller!

Hi Tim
Thanks for the info.
I cked the web site and that looks like what I have!
I was hoping not to have free backing brakes as I am putting on a electric over hydraulic system on the trailer. I dont like surge brakes on this large of boat. (2400 SCR)
Thanks
Don

I have seen the units for $600 but it would also require me to redo the couple holes and mount on the tongue.

Hi Tim
Ya I know, I got the Hydrastar unit. Have not started the conversion yet as we are headed to friends for the 4th and will be gone for about a week and a half
I think I am going to half to eliminate the free backing system,I hate surge brakes!
Thanks
Don
P.S. HAVE GOOD AND SAFE 4TH!

Let us know how the conversion goes. I would like to know the coupler you choose and how easily it mounts. I had to replace my entire brake system six months ago and just replaced everything with what was already there. I also replaced the coupler with the same model and a new brake hose from Karavan keeping the surge brakes set up. Also, since I use it in salt water I made my own flush system out of garden hose fittings and soda machine line.

Looks good!
Thankfully I dont do salt water anymore, or at least I am not planing on it!
Just lakes and rivers.
I have what is left of a brake flush system on my trailer, hoses are just hanging there, will have to do something with them as I do the brakes!
I live in the foothills so it up and down hills, hard on on the tow brakes!
Thanks
Don

Hi everyone!
Just to let you know I finshed my trailer brk conversion and it was a hassle with hyd leaks! But after I got all leaks repaired I did a road test WOW what a difference!
The trailer now stops itself!!!! No more having to press brk peddle hard, same peddle pressure as with empty truck!
Replaced all 4 backing plates and new drumbs with Hydrastar 1200 psi marine unit!
Better brks than my travel trailer with electric brks!
Sorry I did not take any photos!

FYI I've owned several boats that I converted to electric trailer brakes (RV type) Usually your existing drums can be used. I removed the surge coupler and welded on a Bulldog type unit. You need a brake controller, but most new pickups come with then. They work great and are adjustable. Something to consider. Best regards, Tractormel
