Default The cure for 12 foot-itus!

I have a 2100sd open bow. . I knew I wanted a bigger - cabin boat. Well. I found a very nice 1999 SCR 3300 for what I believe to be a good agreed on price! To make a short story... The survey is next Thursday! ( I was really thinking maybe 28-30ft..)

I am very nervous about handling this big of boat with 2 engines... I understand the learning curve is manageable. So everyone says....I am a cautious boater, and have scheduled some "lessons" from the selling broker...payable in vodka after the lessons.

Seems like a solid boat. Seems to run well. 5.0 ltrs. Bravo 2's radar, etc. it needs canvas-that helped the price.... The canvas will survive the Seattle summer, but it will be all new later in the summer.. Needs some 16 year old boat TLC of course...

I haven't had it out of the slip, yet, I will sea trial it during the survey before and after the haul out.

Any advice? I will take all I can get!

So.... Wish me luck with the survey, please.

Rocky

Yes it's a big boat but with twins I think it will be easier to handle than a 28-30 foot with a single engine.

Find a small cove that is empty and practice Turing the boat in tight circles, one engine in forward and the other in reverse. Then switch back in forth directions to get a feel for how it handles. Then practice other docking type maneuvers.

You will find the boat much easier to handle with twins. Particularly docking or other tight maneuvers. Good luck

Rule 1- never approach a dock faster than you want to ram it. Slow and easy is the way. A boat that size will have a lot of moving mass.

Put your fists out in front of you with your knuckles up..... like your holding on to your new boats twin shifters. .... now stick you thumbs out pointing at each other. ... now pretend that you shift the starboard into forward and your port into reverse. .... Your thumbs will now tell you what your front and back of the boat is going to do. .. or which way it will spin/rotate. ... You can also use this to judge how your Prop Walk is going to make the stern react. .. If your backing into a slip and you use your port engine in reverse the Prop walk will make the stern of the boat move towards the starboard. Which is the direction your thumb is pointed.

Sometimes weather will catch you off guard, and you will make approaches you wouldn't otherwise consider. But getting tied up can be amazing

Well.... Had the haulouts and survey yesterday on the 3300 SCR. The boat has issues. most everything seemed to work ok.

The issues are on the drives. They are trying to corrode off the back of the boat. The stbd transom assy is corroded so bad 2 of the lift ram hoses have nothing left to screw into. Both drives have deep corrosion on the housings. The corrosion appears to have been painted over with Krylon or something.

Of course the anodes are toast or missing.

The broker is checking into what the current owner will do, but in the meantime I told them I was going to walk. The rest of the boat is ok...but not a cherry. Seeing the drives cemented the idea that it has had poor maintenance its whole life. I am not sure that i want to buy that type of history.

So..l guess I am back to looking....
Thanks!
