Default Synthetic Oil

Just purchased a 2004 2400 SE. It has a 5.0 liter Merc V8 ( Chevy 305 c i ) It has 310 hrs. I am thinking of running synthetic oil due to our damp winters here in Seattle. The boat is in salt water and moored all year. I do use the boat all winter. Does anyone have any suggestions on this issue? If so what brand and what weight oil do you use? Thanks Tom in Seattle, Washington..

Tom welcome aboard.

Mercruiser recommends 25W - 40 for most conditions. I would look for a marine synthetic as they take into account the marine envirioment with the addatives used including moisture.

Using the boat all year will help but you may want to change the oil twice a year.Howmany hours a year do you expect to put on te engine?

Has Synthetic been used for the first 310 hrs? I use syntehetic, but the engine was installed new and has only ever had synthetic run in it. IMHO, if the engine has 310hrs of regular oil, I'd be puting in regular oil for the rest of its life. Change it regularly and it's not an issue.

Mercury Marine recommends full synthetic for Mercruiser engines, but they list other options as well, take a look at the bottom of their page:

The key question here is what did the PO use? Then check with the owned manual to see make sure you are using the right oil weight and stick to it. I have twin 5.0L's and use Mercury 25w-40oil with no problems.

Why spend more money on synthetic oil if you don't have to. Don't over think this :-)

I swear I recall using a Full Synthetic at some point, though typically Blended is what i find most frequently. I couldn't find a link or reference for Full Synthetic. I also don't recall ever seeing a non Merc 25w40. I've only ever used Mercury or Quicksilver brand lubricants.

West Marine, 20w40, full synthetic. Good for all 4-stroke inboard and sterndrive engines:

Have a 1995 2400 SCR with a new Merc Horizon 350. Only 180 hrs but do advise full synthetic. Engine runs incredible and returing great economy.....
