Newbie going to look at a 1999 2800SCR today.
Hello, I am curious of what things I should look for as I am looking it over today. I am new to Maxum so dont really know their history. I am readng that some people say the boat is underpowered and a pig with the 7.4 and bravo 3? Am I making a mistake with this boat?? Personally I dont want to run twins.

A buddy had the same boat and it was a pig until he got a set of 4 blade props from Hill Marine. Totally different boat afterwards.

Take it for a sea trail and see if you think it’s under powered, different people have different opinions on how much power they need. As stated a 4 blade prop will help. Maxum is no longer in production but as all boats most items are third party so no real issue. I have not heard of any hull issues beyond normal for old boats.

I bought it. It actually preformed pretty well, but may eventually look into 4 blades.

Thanks! It looks like mine are 24p, is that standard? If I was to do some research on 4 blades what do I look at, I dont want to break the bank, but dont want crap either!

As a side note, I am Thinking the new props you are referring to would be for the twin engine boats. Can you share the prop specification with me? Thanks

Agree but the 4 blade should help it plane sooner. I would talk with Hill Marine as suggested to hear what they think.

A buddy of mine has a 2800 with the same motor and I believe he is running a hydrofoil he purchased on amazon. He swears by it, says he gets on plane quicker and has better fuel economy. They have used their 2800 a lot this year and love it. Heather and I plan to move up to the 2800 possibly or a 3000+ (but we are currently loving the fuel economy of the 2400 SCR)
Congrats on your purchase, I've spent a lot of nights on boats and this is our first Maxum as well, we have quickly fallen in love and become brand loyal.

I ran a hydrofoil on my last boat and it did make it plane quicker but that was a smaller boat

yes I've heard the smaller the boat the better the results, but my buddy is running a 2800 and swears he's getting results so that's promising.

Hydrofoil? I'm trying to figure out what you are talking about. I've heard of people putting Whale Tails on the outdrive but I don't think they accomplish much since any forward speed has it out of the water pretty quick....

I wouldn’t use a whale tail on a large boat as they put undo pressure on the transom.

Well I did install one of these and it sure feels like it planes faster and definitely feels more stable. https://www.boatid.com/se-sport/se-s...RoCGCcQAvD_BwE

Whale Tail is just a brand name of a hydrafoil. A large number of people report that they are able to get on plane much quicker and stay on plane at relatively slower speeds.
The problem I have with them is a boat is supposed to get lift from the hull. A foil is generating lift from the outdrive, which is transferring vertical force to the transom assembly. The drive and transom assembly were not designed to lift the weight of the boat and assist in the planing forces. Trim tabs do the same thing.

I had the same exact boat. 24P on a BIII with a 454 is overpropped. I would be shocked if you could reach 4800 rpm with a full load of gear, fuel, water and people. 22.5P is the correct number. I've run both.
