My New Project - 94 Maxum 2400 SCR
1994 Maxum SCR Project 5.7 with a Alpha I Gen II. The motor only has 100 hrs but it is ceased. New batteries, new VHF radio and antenna, GPS, radio, manual flush toilet, refrigerator, sink and all the required equipment to be in the water. Solid trailer, but needs Brake Actuator . It also needs s few fixtures in the Head. and a few minor repairs. Oh the eng is ALL NEW except Carb and Alt.
After this broke down the owner decided to buy buy a 40' Regal. and it is a AWESOME boat!
The story goes like this.... while Docking the Boat at idle, the eng was sputtering a little, he put the the eng in Neutral and it sized up.
I went to look at the Boat Sunday (in the rain)....Pulled the dip stick and the oil level was 3x over "FULL". Oil was very clean and no evidence of water. We tried to turn over the eng with a socket on the Crank, but wouldn't turn clock wise or counter clock wise. Looked inside the valve cover thru oil fill and it was like brand new inside.
I am kinda hoping it’s a dropped valve but who knows till its apart. The plan is to remove the Heads and intake...etc and see what happened. then if I have to replace the eng I can get a Mercruser 5.7 short block from a friend.
Has anyone removed a eng out of this model boat. Looks to be a real PAIN. Good thing I am not a big fella...lol Kinda tight in the eng compartment.
Todd

I have a couple of times, drop the leg and all the wiring hose etc.You will have to pull the motor forward when you start to lift I used a fork lift on mine. You can pull it with the heads on and manifolds .I would change the gimble bearing and bellows at this point and remember to line the motor up when you reinstall. Not to hard a job at all 2-3hrs out and back in 2-3 hrs if you are slow like me.good luck

I used motor lift chain on the back of the block head and front of block head so the center lift was right above the carb .Once you take the weight off slide it ahead and turn to clear the back. I comes out not bad at all.I removed the lag bolts from the motor mounts and resealed them after .You need a line up shaft to line the motor after good luck

I am going to take the heads off and see whats going on, if I have to take the block out it should be alot easier. But I hope the problem is in the Heads.

NO..... YOU HAVE WATER IN THE ENGINE....
Water and oil, the water is sitting under the oil in the oil pain.
you need to drain the oil and water first.
Best to open the oil plug in the pan, not pump it out because the oil pumpers will not pull the water at the bottom of the oil pan.
Next,
Pull all the spark plugs and then see if you can turn the engine over by hand.
Water in the cylinders DOSE NOT COMPRESS , ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE..... you have hydro lock.
I would guess your raw water manifolds are leaking down into your cylinders and into the crank case.
The water also will run into the intake valves, so you have a flooded intake manifold under you carburetor.
Change the oil, dry the spark plugs, and run the motor with the raw was disconnected, to isolate the engine from the raw water cooling loop.

Have you drained all the oil out of the engine. If I recall the oil doesn't actually circulate through the dipstick tube and you make simply be seeing an increased volume of water that is being raised as a result of the water being heavier than oil and sinking o the bottom. I would suspect that a simple oil change would show you whether there is water in there. Sure, pulling a valve cover should theoretically show the same, but I'd think an oil change is easier.

I hope to pick up the boat this weekend, once in my driveway I'll drain the oil out and let you know. With the Holliday traffic it ought to be fun trailering it 100 miles to my house.

i'd bump the engine on the starter to see if it will move.
WD-40 the cylinders, it might be a little surface rust holding it back.
you want lubrication on those rings as soon as possible.

Do not bump it with the starter. Whatever has the thing locked up will only be made worse when you apply all that torque from the starter to it.
If no water came out of the cylinders when you removed the plugs, but you still couldn't rotate it with a rachet/socket something broke. It might have dropped a valve, bent/broke a rod, or didn't have enough oil and a bearing seized. Or, or, or.....

I am not familiar with the engine layout of your boat, can't you do a valve job with the motor installed?
