Put a new prop on the boat this morning. She's running better than ever:

Had 15x17 3 blade aluminium was getting these numbers:
WOT: 37mph @4900 rpm
cruise(on plane) 23mph @ 3700rpm

New prop is a Mercury marine Alpha 4, 4 blade aluminium

New numbers are much better and much closer to the manufacturers specs:
WOT: 34mph @ 4500rpm
cruise(on plane) 20mph @ 3200rpm
And she gets on plane much faster and smoother than with the old 3 blade.

These number were tested with 3 ppl on board, full gear, and 1/2 tank of fuel. Also, we left the drive all the way down and trim tabs in the full up position for all the above numbers... Trimmed out a bit we can get an extra 1500 rpm and 3-4mph out of her but no need to push it, she is almost 20 years old...

For those that don't know us:
Bar Hopper is a 1995 2400scr with a 5.0 Mercruiser with an alpha one drive. She always carries a full fresh water tank(13 gal), 1/2 full(7 gal) holding tank, we carry a grill, 2 anchors, fenders, and gear for the sandbar. So she is usually "Pretty Heavy".

No problem mike. Wasn't sure exactly where to
post this. When I asked about changing props I got a whole bunch of different answers. So I figured giving some concrete specs would be helpful for future prop questions.

Jim ........you did exactly what the manufacturer wants. Both the engine and prop

Put your normal weight in the boat. Know your wot and go from there.

Either enjoy your get up and go mode or I want to go as fast has possible mode and or something in the middle.

Changing your pitch or going for more blades will do the job. This can be alot of trial and error so its great you got

what you wanted with your new prop without having to do alot of experimenting with different props.:-)

I have a 2004 2400SCR. I was wondering what is the pitch on your new alpha 4 prop, 4 blade. I would like to give it a try.

Heres what I had on my 2400SC. 14.5x17. In tthe Book

14.25 x 19 on boat 4 blade

14.5 x 19 spare 3 blade. I really liked the 4 blade prop. WTO was a little below recommended max rpm but all in all I like the performance

David, we went with the 15x16 prop. It works great. we even get more speed and handling at idle speed. those 4 blade really grab the water.

Just an update... A couple weeks ago, on a trip to the sandbar, one of our friends had an issue with his boat(not a maxum) and had to return to the dock. We loaded him and his guests onto our boat and another boat... We had a total of 8ppl. onboard and with a little help from the trim tabs, she had no problem getting up on plane. Still impressed with the performance this new 4 blade prop is giving us.

Incidentally, I looked at all 32 of your posts. I don't see that you asked this question on this site. I'm assuming you asked elsewhere? This post kind of insinuates you asked the forum members and received misleading information.
