Default Drive oil

So apparently I'm losing drive oil somewhere. Speedo isn't working either. Boat is in water so a little difficult to fully troubleshoot.

Would the two things likely be related ?

No they are completely isolated from each other. Are you finding gear lube in the bilge or seeing a sheen on the water at the back of the boat? The speedo could be a blockage of the pickup on the leading edge of the drive.

I filled it to about 75% give or take and had the boat out. Checked it the other day and was down to about 20%. So I refilled but it has a chocolate milk appearance as if water is getting mixed in. Maybe the level dropped as it got recirculated (?)

You have a leak that is letting water into the drive and it will not last the season. The boat needs to be pulled now and the drive resealed. Also look at the condition of the lube line on the outside of the transom assembly as it may be the source of the leak. Hopefully the gears and bearings are not already damaged.

So....boat started making knocking sound when going over 2krpm. Figure something is messed up. Pulled out of water. Should I drain oil from outdrive and see what it looks like? Or just take it apart and see what I find

Are you certain the knock is from the drive and not the gimbal bearing or engine? I would pull the boat and drain the gear lube to see what it looks like. Then remove the drive and run the engine for a few minutes to see if the knock is gone. If it is then it’s either the drive or the gimbal bearing.

I could feel the drive almost slipping. Like a slipping transmission or something. Then the knocking started

Most likely the drive is trash. Slipping would be the dog clutch, not sure about the knock but there is metal filing throughout the drive now and probably rust due to the water. Gears and bearing hate both of these.

Ok. Drained the oil and is was milkshakey but not terrible. Some metal shavings fine on the drain plug but again. Not terrible. But there's a sort of knock coming from where the trim attaches . Like it's a spun transmission. I assume this is the lower unit that is bad ?

Remove the lower to see if the noise goes away. Only run for a minute or two since you won’t have cooling. If it still knocks pull the upper and try again.

If you put in drive and then prop by hand. Should there. E a loud noise like a hammer is striking a piece of steel!

First drive must be trimmed down then in forward the prop should turn freely one direction without noise and not be able to turn in the other direction. Then put the drive in reverse and it should turn the other direction.

Its clicking the clutch gear or whatever when I spin it. And I can hear that knocking noise when running on hose. Gonna split it sometime this week and see if noise goes away.

Ran it again after replacing oil and all noises etc were gone...hmm. So removed the outdrive completely. I think I should have removed the gear selector (?). See attached. What did I mess up here ?

On the right is the shift cable end, square bar; rotate it clockwise until two forks are at the 9 o’cLock position. Then position the center shift mechanism so the roller is between the forks.
