Default 96 2300 SC alpha one 5.7 liter 300 HP

I recently purchased a 96 2300 SC alpha one 5.7 liter 300 HP. Before taking it out I purchased the prop I was told was original (was kept as backup to prop that came on boat that I had to remove); Mercury Mercruiser Black Max Propeller 48-16440- A40 16P. I water tested it this weekend, while light chop and windy it maxed out about 23 knots. What prop do you recommend for better performance?

Secondly, I noticed it does not have a blower, but fume hose leading to side vent in engine compartment. Thoughts?

A 5.7 300 HP, is this a repower MPI engine? In 96' the original engine was most likely a 5.7 260HP 4 bbl carb.

Try Mercuisers prop calculator

What you want in a prop is to achieve the engines rated WOT which for your engine should be 4400 - 4800 rpm

Add a blower no question.
