Default Pre-purchase Question

My name is Jim and I am looking at purchasing a 1989 Maxum open bow 17 ft. Boat with an outboard 85 hp engine. Any idea how much the boat and trailer weigh? I have a 1/2 ton pickup truck and am not sure if the boat and trailer weigh more than 2,000 lbs. Thanks!

Jim welcome aboard.

I has a Sea Ray 200; 20' that weighted 2700 lbs and the trailer was about another 1000 lbs. for trailering you also need to include boat fuel and all other supplies that will be in the boat.

What 1/2 ton pick up do you have? I have not seen one that would tow less that 5000 lbs even without a tow package.

NADA guide shows the boat as weighing 1480 lbs. This doesn't include the trailer.

Do you know if that included the outboard?

Guess I was expecting around 2000 lbs.

The 1480 includes boat and 85 hp motor. Stern drive adds 300 lbs.

Good info.

Add 8 lbs times gallons of gas. All other gear. I would expect this to be cake walk for a 1/2 ton pich up

OK guess I did not know they were rated as 1/2 ton. If you do not know the tow rating it can be looked up but need to know year, engine and if transmission is manual or automatic.

Thanks for your assistance. I called the dealership and they were helpful in giving me the towing capacity of my vehicle.

That truck should be able to tow this size boat with no problem at all. install a class 4 hitch if it doesn't have one already. I wouldn't suggest using the bumper hitch though if the truck it prepped for it.
I pull a 21' center console with a 115 yammy with a 1/2 GMC with no problems at all and well within the towing capacity. I'm sure you are fine.
