Default New Tow Vehicle!

Hey guys,

Admiral and I purchased a new 2010 F-150 XLT Super Crew 5.4 V8, upgraded tow package (11,000lbs.) last weekend. Went with the Ford primarily because they took no bailout money. Took the boat out the following day. Couldn't even feel the trailer back there (my set up is probably a total of about 4,400) or hear / feel the truck shift. Towed it to Long Beach - about 80 miles each way - averaged 13.5 mph. Really pleased with the truck. It was the admiral's turn to pick the color (wouldnt have been my first choice) and she will be driving it most of the time to where she boards her horse. I'll only drive it when the boat is behind it. Thanks for listening!

Sweet truck Brian, and I actually like the color.

Here's a pic of mine just afte taking possession of our boat, and before having had a chance to clean it.

Dan, thanks. Great photo of yours.

SP, we were going 65-70 mph almost the whole way. Actually had to concentrate keeping it that slow! Gas mileage was pleasant surprise.

Ut oh, even my girly man truck will drag my boat along faster than that. Last time I pulled it I was running between 65 and 70.

I'd better go check what the law states here in Va....

SP is right on. Posted speed limit on freeways for vehicles with any trailer here in Ca is 55.

Try my hardest to comply but, well, ya know.........it's not too often here in so cal when there is no traffic and one must take advantage of that from time to time.........unless of course........there is a CHP close by.

so ...your talking about towing a boat 75mph with a truck....would I do it???nope...not in your life.....60 might be pushing it........55mph would be about it with a boat....

just my opinion...your laws and results may vary.......you WILL be the scene of the accident at that speed...

I had a 17-foot Maxum and towed at 75mph on the straight road.
Durango 5.7 had no problems and was very stable.

I changed to a Maxum 22 feet and had that doubt.
Thanks for your reply.

Of course you can go 75mph. In fact you can go as fast as your truck will pull your boat! You'll hardly even feel it behind the truck ....until it fishtails and flips, probably rolling you and your truck and anyone else on the roads with you. The fact of the matter is speed limits are not targets and when towing with your truck or car will act differently from its design specifications for just a car.

You have to tow a load at a safe speed and 55mph/90kph is about it.

......if nothing else for the sake of the lives of the other drivers around you.

Thanks for your opinion.

55mph is safe and reasonable.

Sah-weet Ride Brian, You will love that truck. I am a Ford F-series freak from a long way back. I have two (from new) F-350 FWD Crew Cabs presently, a SRW 1993 w/ 7.5l gas (that will pass anything except a gas station!) and my later model Super Duty Turbo Diesel that is a DRW. Both trucks tow Bella like a freight train. The 5.4 is a good motor, lots a pep. Enjoy it, (when your wife will let you get your hands on it!)

Just picked up a Nissan Titan crew cab to tow my 2300SR...absolutely love it so far, can't wait to drag the boat out of storage in a month! Always been a Ford guy, that's also what I was looking at (much the same reason too--no bailouts) but came across this one and may never go back! Very well-built truck, lots of zip & some cool design things that I've never seen on the domestics. And still made in the USA but not under the thumb of the UAW

Smile Great Color

BrianM,
Tell the Admiral I liked the color choice. What's it called? I've been a Ford man all my life and I agree, "they didn't take the bailout money" which has helped improve their sales. The tow vehicle for my boat (sorry, no photos) has been a '95 Aerostar XLT AWD with the 4.0 V-6. Handles the '92 1800SR on an Escort trailer with plenty of power to spare. Here in Illinois the speed limit is also 55mph for tow vehicles, which is hard to adhere to when you want to get on the water! Have fun with the new ride and "great boatin".
