Default Motor Size for 1600

You,all heard this before im new. got my hands on a 1989 16'7 maxum, dont know a lick about it . the motor that was on it was 50hp force. the transum had other mount holes in it making me think there was a whole lot bigger motor on it. what is the best size motor for this boat without making the coastguard mad. and with that said what kind of motor, evinrude, johnson, mercruser etc. any info would be greatly apprciated.

Welcome aboard

Is there a capacity rating label? It should list max weight and power. As far as which manufacture everyone has there own idea what is best. Did you verify the transom is solid and has no rot?
