Default 1800mx transducer location

I bought my 1800MX new in 2008 and installed a shoot-thru transducer for my previous depthfinder (Garmin 440s) but since upgrading I need to install the transducer on the outside of the hull. Right now, it's installed just starboard of the cutout in the transom (the cubby where the drive lives) but it doesn't read when moving, most likely because of turbulence in the water at that location. I'm considering smart-tabs so I may end up limited on where I can put the transducer.. Does anyone have any ideas or pics of where they've installed the transducer so it reads while under way but doesn't interfere with trailering or smart tab installation?

Thanks.
