Smile 1997 20' SRF engine swap

Hello everybody, this is my first post but I have read most of the old posts. I just got a 20' Maxum Ski and Fish with a bad motor. I took it to the repair shop and they wanted $6000 to swap the engine so I thought its time to learn how to do it myself. If anyone is interested I will post step by step pictures.

stiches welcome aboard.

Is the boat an outboard or I/O? What engine?

We love projects so keep us posted.

It has an Alpha II drive.

I am going to post more pictures soon as the project moves along.

First step will be drive removal I guess.

Correct the drive must be removed first. Do you have a mercruiser manual?

I downloaded one for the engine but I don't think it includes the drive.

Hey Mike ever had any dealing with Doug Russell's out there on the east coast? I see his advertisements all the time in my boating magazine... wonder if they are any cheaper?

Anyone tried Rapido Marine? 2K shipped for a 350 Vortec seems pretty good.

Roger I bought a new 4.3 longblock from them a many (9) years ago. No issues and got what I thought was the best price at the time.

To remove the drive, remove outer nuts on rams and remove the thread shaft. Then remove the 6 nuts on the top half facing rearward. Then pull drive off.

PS the shifter must be in forward.

I guess my next question is will the engine clear the top of the boat using a regular engine hoist?

I doubt a car engine chery picker will have anywhere near the lift required to get the engine over the transom. Yep you will most likely need to remove all the enclosure around the engine

When I did my 20' sea ray i had a large beam to hand a block and tackle on for lifting the engine.

I guess an A frame or maybe a fork lift would work.
