Either one should do it as long as it has the lift to get the engine over the transom

I started the teardown of the engine.
I measured 24" from the rear lifting hook to the bottom of the oil pan, does that sound about right?
If it is I think I will be able to use my engine hoist. I figure I have about 30" of room between the lifting hook and the top of the hoist.
I watched some U-tube videos on engine removal. One guy added a 4"x4" steel tube to raise the hoist.

Stiches .........it is great to see this here on this website.
I go over to bayliner site every once in a while :-) and there is always a thread on somebody tearing something apart and putting it back together on some size boat.
Keep up all the play by play pictures and I hope you come out on top with a scream in maxum.

24" sounds about right but looking at the picture you need another 12" to clear the top of the transom for a toal of 36".
You shosure from top of transomto bottom of the oil pan to determine full lift required.

This is my hoist at full extension. I was thinking if I removed the tires from the trailer I might have enough room.

This is a link to 2 drunk guys lifting an engine. If they can do it I guess I can. Check the modified hoist.

Removing the tires will lower the boat and help, so give it a try.
If you notice the guys in the youtube modified their engine lift to raise the jack and boom portion by several feet. The boat they were pulling the engine from sits much higher than yours though.

So today I removed the tires to lower the boat.
This gave me 38.5" from top of transom to lifting hook. It also gave me 30.5" from top of transom to the bottom of the load leveler.

Very close. In the end you may need to swing the engine out to get it over the top of the transom (i have done this), if so place an old blanket on th transom so not to mess it up.

Do you think the load leveler is necessary? Will the engine just find its own balance on a chain?

Depends on where the chain is attached to the engine. If you can attach it front to back and then pickup at the center of he chain you should be able to do without te load leveler.

The engine has the standard lifting points - one by the ps pump and the other in the back by the distributer.

Nice but how did you get to the rear bolts without removing the engine box enclosure?
Elbows do not look to bad how are the manifolds?
