Default Which outdrive do I have

Hey All,
I have a 1997-98 2300sr with the 5.7 that sat the past two years since we had a new born . I want to replace the bellows and the impeller precautionary . After doing some research I THINK. I have a alpha 1 gen 2. Does that sound correct ? Also if so does anyone have a kit pn I can order or is it best to just go to the local marina and talk to them ?

Yes to my suprise the boat started after about 15 seconds on the starter lol
Even wet sanded it due to the damaged gel coat . She has been neglected but trying to get her back to life

Is the serial number on the drive legible? These parts diagrams should have the info you need:

If you don’t have an engine mounted raw water pump it’s an Alpha 1 Gen 2.

I’m pretty positive from the research I have a GEN 2?I’m going to start ripping it apart to do bellows and probably an impeller . I know I need some specialty tools for the bellow replacement . Are there kits available that come with all the bellows and sealant ? Same question for the impeller . And do you all recommend a certain brand ?

Yes that’s a Gen 2. Mercruiser/Quicksilver make a bellows kit that comes with all 3 bellows, gimbal bearing, lower shift cable, water hose and seals. This is the perfect time to replace the trim limit switch and trim sender which are sold together. Mercruiser/Quicksilver also make a impeller kit. Under Documents of this site you will find the Mercruiser manual for your outdrive, this has the procedures for both jobs.

Perfect I will go to the local boat dealer and see if they can get me that kit . I will Deff get the switches based on the recommendation. Any special tools needed besides the one to spread the bellows ?

Simple. If you didn't replace it, then assume it needs replacing.

Impeller is a pretty easy job, I did mine last year. Just be sure to put the drive in forward, a lower end stand would be helpful to have but not necessary.

I finally got some time to replace the bellows. When I pulled the lower off , I found shims laying in the exhaust bellows. This is a used boat , first time I have been inside it . Looks like they have been in there for a while based on some metal marks.Anyone have an idea?

That’s the remains of your exhaust flappers. They should be at the top of the y-pipe. They prevent water backflow into the engine, replace then now.

Don't ya love finding "other" stuff when you do a job lol. I am about to jump into my risers and manifolds and I am assuming my flapper is gonna be toast when I open it up. We shall see

Happy easter everyone. Just wanted to get on here and thank everyone for there input. Im making slow progress due to my work life. Currently have the bellows on the transom. I do have the bellows on the exhaust of the bellhousing installed, but after further inspection, im not satisfied that its on all the way so I will be removing it and re-applying adhesive and trying again. Another mistake I made was when i was trying to install the drive shaft bellows, the aluminum spacer would not seat. Found that the clamp holding the oil res line is in the way and now leaking oil (knowing my luck i cracked the fitting). Hopefully this week I will get time to tear it apart , and repostion the clamp. Anyways, thank you to all for helping this newb .
