Default Steering pin

So I have a 99 Maxim 3200 scr and I had the boat summarized and the mechanic told me that the steering pin had signs of leakage. My question is if I decide to move forward with the repair how likely am I to get into a problem with the boat transom? Would there be concern for rot? When I say leak it is really more of a drip. Any advice would be appreciated

Typically this does lead to transom rot. It’s a pretty big job. There are three option.

1. Mercruiser kit that drill holes in either side of the housing to allow removal of the nut.

2. JR Marine that requires the top rear to be drilled and cut off then install their rectangular patch.

3. Remove engine then remove transom assembly.

Gotcha. I am just trying to gauge what my exposure would look like if I decide to replace my transoms. If I get the boat out of the water and start disassembly and find out the transom is rotted then the boat is not really economically repairable

Hit it with a dead blow hammer listening for soft spots

I have read JR marine are really good people, they will give you the special wrench you need to loosen the pin, and always there to help out.

Worth researching, its what I will likely be doing.
Looks pretty easy.
Good Luck.

Take a moisture meter to the transom (both inside and outside). Then take a small rubber mallet and sound the hull by tapping all along the transom. I tap ever few inches and cover every inch of the hull (In your case transom).

Anywhere there is a hollow sound, will likely also test for moisture.

Default I had same issue

On my 94 3200 I had the same issue. Just finished repowering, tested the transom and replaced both original transom assemblies. Last year and for a few week I had this same leak. Hull was still solid.
