Default Horn porthole

I was getting a fair amount of water in the anchor locker when it rained. It was also getting the carpet above the v-birth on the hull side wet. It seems to be coming in the port/vent for the horn. When I pulled the cover off there seems to be remnants of some foam/plastic. Any idea if something was used to stop moisture from rain, washing or even rough water from getting in?

Is the horn there, looks like an open hole?

Sure is but I don’t see a nut in the stud in the picture, this can let water in.

I can see the water running down into the anchor locker from the bottom of the porthole. Because of the upward facing position on the bow it is always going to be letting water in. I am just assuming there was some type of membrane allowing the sound to get out but stopping water from getting in.

There should be some type of gasket on the face of the horn to provide a seal, however if it’s only secured on one side as you picture suggests it will leak. Remove the horn to verify there is a gasket then reinstall with hardware on both sides of the horn.

when I replaced mine, there was a thin sheet of foam that was deteriorating. I assumed it was for bugs. I supposed it could have wicked water away from the hole as well.

Mine was like yours Shrew, just remains of some kind foam. My horn is in the anchor locker so any water seemed to drain through the drain. (3100SE)

As I also said in my post the carpeting on the side of the hull was quite wet and there was some mold on it when we bought the boat. It had sat a few years with no use. From the picture you can see where the deck and hull are joined.
There is a bit of a lip and I am wondering if the boat was sitting at the right angle water over time ran down this lip and in behind . I am hoping it is not coming in through a railing mount. So hard to trace down water leaks.

Cut a piece of Styrofoam to fit the hole.

The overlap is about an inch with the deck fitting over the hull lip so it would be hard to wick water up that although I have heard of sea spray getting in if the joint becomes loose.
