1994 3200 SCR Nav Lights Question

What should be a simple task, opening up the port nav light housing to change a burnt-out bulb, is turning into a maddeningly frustrating exercise. Maxum's owner manual is no help at all.

I see there's a little hole on the back of the housing. I assume there's a screw in there. But the hole is completely blocked by a guardrail stanchion and I can't get a screwdriver in there at all. Do I really have to remove the guardrail in order to change one little light bulb? Am I missing something here?

How do I do this? Please help. Thanks.

can you post a picture?

Most nav lights require the entire assembly to be removed from the deck (2 screws) then 2 more screws from the underside to gain access to the bulb

I'll try to get a picture tomorrow. I was hoping someone who has one of these boats can give me a quick answer. I've replaced nav light fixtures before on other boats and it's no big deal. This one has stumped me though.

Here's a picture of the port nav light. The arrow indicates the only place I can see where a screw might be located. It is blocked by the railing stanchion above it. I can't get a screwdriver in there at all. Seems like a major design flaw.

Looks like you should be coming down from the top. Have you tried either a long screw driver or an offset screw driver?

Long screwdriver won't fit. The stanchion blocks the screw hole completely except in that small triangle of space the arrow indicates. You can probably see the screw hole in the picture is a little deformed by me trying to get my long screwdriver into it. No dice. I'll get an offset screwdriver and give that a try.

On my 98 3200SCR, I use one of those short screw driver drivers (like on the 4 in 1 screw drivers, or even better from a driver set as they are shorter) with vise grips to apply the torque (and to slow me down from dropping the driver overboard!).

Thanks ezcurra! I was thinking along the same lines until mmwjr suggested an offset screwdriver. I went down to AutoZone and picked one of those up. It works great. You should consider getting one for the next time you burn out a nav light.
