Default What is this...

I just picked up a 2001 1800 SR. I got it from a dealer, as someone just traded it in on a newer boat. They did a full service and inspection on it, so I'd like to think it's in good mechanical shape. (They sold it with an included warranty so that helped my decision.) Reason I'm writing is because there is a an open hole on the engine cover and no one can figure out what it's for. I tried to attach a picture so hopefully it worked. It's about the size of a soda can, has a plastic fitting around it and looks like it had metallic tape in it. It's on the front of the cover, about mid height. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Could be a port for a fire extinguisher

That doesn’t look OEM. It resembles a waterproof cable clamp.

It’s not original to the boat but I agree with Trey, looks like a fire extinguisher port. This way you don’t open the engine cover which would supply more oxygen to the fire.

Possibly housed an hour meter? I've seen them mounted this way on some older boats.

My 2001 1800 SR had the same hole, but mine also had a flap on it. It had a picture of a fire extinguisher on the flap.

Exactly. One of my boats back in the late 50's had that hole and the flap. Definitely for safe insertion of fire extinguisher hose.
