Default thermostat replacement SCR 2900

Does almost $1000. seem like a lot for diagnosis of overheating problem and the fix was a new thermostat on a 2900 SCR with a single merc cruiser 454?

It does sound like a lot unless there was more to the diagnosis part than you are telling.

Nothing else. Out with my family and on the way in and alarm went off and temp gauge needle way toward the right (200 degrees approx). I stopped boat and temp went down and restarted boat and slowly temp went up again and alarm sounded and I slowly proceeded to my slip slow enough so as not to set off alarm. I spoke to marina mechanic and we both thought defective thermostat(cost $35) but he wanted to check other sources to be thorough....to the tune of almost $1000.

What is his labor rate and how many hours did he charge you for? $150 for 8 hours will get you to $1000 but IMO it should not take anywhere near that long. 2-3 hours top.
