Welcome Aboard!

The gray wire is the sense coming from the negative side of the ignition coil. Using a voltmeter see if there is voltage on this wire when the engine is running. There is a cylinder select on the back of the tach, try moving it back and forth a few times to see if this helps. It's a know issue for bouncy tachs.

Thanks Mike

Hi, I have read this thread about tachometer problems. I have power on the grey sense wire and today I went down to the boat again to try to turn the cylinder setting knob. I did so several times but the tachometer is dead. Is there anything else that can be done to wake it up?

I have a 2300 SR from year 2002 and live in Sweden so the spare part situation can be a bit problematic

In addition to verifying pulses on the sense wire did you verify good 12V positive and negative power to the tach? If so the tach is dead.

One more trick you can try. Take a strong magnet and run it around the gauge where the tip of the needle would track. If the tech is good you should be able to move the needle with the magnet. Sometimes the internals get a little stuck over winter and once they are worked back a forth a bit will start working again. I resurrected a few with this trick.

You need a really strong magnet not just a fridge magnet.

Thank You both Mike and Yahoo 82 for the suggestions. I will check these and se if something happens. For the magnet i can try neodym-magnet and see i it helps.
