Default Tach/hour meter questions

I have a 2001 1800SR. When I bought it used a few weeks ago, it did not have a tach. I bought a whole used panel and replaced some of the gauges, tach being one of them. I hooked it up and when I start the motor, on muffs, I just get a slight flicker of movement but no real reading. What I assume is an hour meter displays on the screen. I'll troubleshoot the tach issue later, my question now is, is the hour reading something that is saved in the tach from the previous owner, or are they the hours from my boat? Again, I bought the boat used and did not know the hours at the time of purchase. There is also an icon/symbol displayed on the left of the hour reading. Can anyone tell me what it means? I've included a picture of the readout.

Thank you.

The hours would be that of the boat the gauge came from. It’s just a counter that starts counting when it gets power from the ignition being in the run position. I cannot make out the symbol on my iPad, can you post a zoomed in picture?

On second look it looks like part of the display is faulty.
Looks like it has 310.9 hrs.

I guess an hour glass would make sense. It flashes when the display is powered on, not sure if that means anything or not. Thanks for the input on the actual time. I assumed it was just a counter in the tach, but now I know for sure.

Thanks again for the help!

Thanks Don, that’s what I thought it was.

OP is there any buttons on this gauge? Just wondering if it could be a service indicator.

Ok may just have a built in timer. I had a JohnDeere tractor that had a similar maintenance light that came on and flashed at a predetermined interval for a given period of time and then reset until the next interval.

If the “icon” blinks, it’s Just an indication that power is applied to the hour meter and it’s accumulating time.

There is no way to reset it or calibrate it to the “original” engines hours. This is a non serviceable unit.

You could replace the tach/hour meter assembly with a new unit.
If you knew the actual engine hours, it would be possible to power up the hour meter and run it until it accumulated the correct time.

Default Hours / Miles

I have a 1993 Maxum 1800SR that does not have an odometer on the dash. Is there a way to find out how many hours or Miles/Kilometers is on the engine?

Boats May or may not have an hour meter, there are no meters for distance. Newer Mercruiser units store operating hours but your 1993 does not.
