Default surpentine belt broke

I had my surpentine belt break today, luckly in the marina. Before I replace it , I'm concern about how it broke...

It looks like it over heated part of the belt untill it harded the belt in a 2 or 3 inch circle, then broke there....

Olympic boat parts department said the seawater pump will most likely needs replacing too, but I don't think that would make the belt break the way it did....

Are they right , or do I need to look somewhere else for the problem??

boy ...what timing.....sorry to hear about your belts...I've been dealing with something similar....
first off...now that the belt is off...check all of the pulleys to make sure they turn freely......if they turn by hand it ain't the pump..however..the question from me is when was the last time you replaced the impeller???..
if the mechanic is saying that the belt had hard spots...it sounds like it was loose and something didn't turn...did you have any heating???

I just had my belt replaced...it was new and squeeled like a banshee....tried to take any slack out and stripped the adjusting bolt....got a new bolt and new belt...no more squeel...we figured it's a defective belt.....

hope this helps...

and I live up in everett....so I know the guys at everett oly real well..
