Shift cable adjustment.

I have a 1999 Maxum 2300SR with a 7.4L MPI (454 Chevy) and the Bravo III. When I move the shifter into reverse the motor starts to rev a little before engaging (banging) into reverse. This must be just a cable adjustment. I haven't yet located a manual for this boat so any info in the mean time would be appreciated.
