Default Replace engine, from gas to diesel

Hi

I have a Maxum 2800 SCR from 1999, it has an 6.2 L Bravo MPI engine
I am thinking on changing the engine to a diesel engine.
Can somebody tell my how much HK (horsepower) I should have on the new Diesel engine.

(PS, I know I have to change the drive to X drive)

Hello,
I recently purchased a Maxum 2700 SCR equiped with a mercedes diesel engine - 109 HP
since we sail most of the time on inland waters (Netherlands, Belgium and France) , this is enough since speed is limited anyhow

That boat was definitely repowered. That boat came with win 4.3 and a single 7.4 option. I think there might have also been a twin 5.0 for that model year as an option.

7.4: 310HP
4.3: 220 (440 total)
5.0: 260 HP (520 total)

6.2L: 300 HP

8.1: 370
8.2: 430 HP

The 8.1 and 8.2 replaced the older 7.4 in later years from Mercruiser. Note that the additional HP of twins comes with additional weight as well. I think that the 6.2 and 7.4 were a little underpowered IMHO. When I upgraded my 7.4 (carb) to an 8.1 MPI it was an improvement, but I felt it could have used a little more.

Personally, I'd be shooting for the 400 - 430 hp range. The decrease in fuel burn with diesel vs the increase in fuel burn for HP will relatively little change in functional range based on the existing tank size.

Note that most diesels require a fuel return to the fuel tank which your gas tank doesn’t have.
