Default Problem with boat starting

Has anyone had the problem of the Maxum not starting, wait awhile and then it starts. I have done all the checks mentioned on line, kill switch, make sure its in gear, batteries working, it is intermittent, can anyone give me some feedback on this. Sometimes it starts right up, other times I have to wait and keep trying until it starts....so frustrating.

A little more info needed.

Does it crank but not start or not crank?

What engine and year?

Carb or fuel injected?

Mike, it's a 1996, 2700 SCR, 454 engine, Carberator. Sometimes it starts right up, other times I turn the key and nothing, and sometimes it starts up but stops. It's very intermittent, but I'm afraid sooner or later it just won't start.

Thank you,
Linda

Linda I believe you have a bad slave soleniod. The symptoms fit. It is located on top of the engine near the engine breaker and cost about $25.

However this is only for the not cranking issue. Not sure if the start and dies is a separate issue until you resolve the no crank. Try replacing the soleniod and report the results.

Slave solenoid is most likely cause of your problem. If you still have problems after new slave solenoid then ignition switch is next suspect.

Mike is this a part I can get anywhere, is it a standard part or do I need it specifically or a Maxum? Sorry I'm new at this. Thanks,

Linda

Linda - you get it from a local mercruiser parts store or aftermarket (Sierra) from almost anywhere. Just Google mercruiser slave solenoid, even Walmart has them.
