Default New engine..is it worth using a new prop?

Hi Guys. I have a 2300sc 1997. It has the 2 barrel 5.7 mercruiser with standard prop. Due to a major argument between my motor and myself, I have had to repower. I put in a vortec motor with a 4 barrel carb. I was "told" that my old set up was rated at around 220hp and the new motor is rated at 300-310hp.

Assuming this is somewhat true, then is it worth re-propping to take advantage of this additional power. I always thought it was a bit sluggish getting on a plane, so would like it to get up faster and just have general all round performance.

Thanks.

Good morning Paul and welcome aboard. Find out your top end for your rpm range with your new engine and go from there. Your pitch ( I hope I don't have this backwards) to go up you will lose rpms, go down in pitch you add and it is around 200 rpm a move either way.

A SS prop might be the way to go once you get your pitch figured out. Check the Mercury prop selecter website also.

Paul welcome aboard

I guess the old engine taught you

As Roger suggested see what WOT the new engine is getting with the current prop. He is also correct about adding an inch of pitch will cause ~200 rpm decrease. Switching to a SS prop of the same pitch will also drop the rpms.

If you were not happy before you may be now as the new engine has more HP and torque.

PS: don't argue with the wife you'll loose that one as well

LOL, thanks for the help. I will report back in a few weeks (hopefully) with the performance and the wot rpms are.
