Mark go to Documents and find the Mercruiser manual for your engine and there is a section on engine removal. This is general but will give you a good idea of the process. In short remove outdrive, disconnect the battery, disconnect the 10 pin engine plug, remove exhaust, disconnect fuel line, remove engine mount bolts (forward and rear), pull engine.

I had to replace my outdrive. I looked into doing it myself, which required engine removal. The process didn't seem overly bad, but the biggest obstacle was how to get the engine out. With the boat on blocks or on the trailer, it is way too high to remove with a standard engine picker that you would use for a car. Ended up just having the Marina do it since they had the crane to do it with.

You only need to remove the engine to replace the transom assembly. The outdrive can be removed and re-installed fairly easily with 6 bolts.

Thanks Shrew, you are correct. What was my bad and used wrong name, it was both the Transom and the Outdrive I needed to replace.

Removing and re-installing is fairly easy. you're going to need a engine alignment tool to re-install. I'd mark the location of the mounts before I removed them. While the engine is out, that is a good time to completely clean and re-paint the engine compartment.
