Default New boat know nothing about it

Hi everyone. I picked up a 1990 Maxum from a lien sale for 200$. Problem is I know nothing about it. It has an L-Drive and 4 cyl motor. I havent been able to find out the model. Its been hard to find any answers when you don't know what to look up. It turns but has no spark just cranks. USHC39MBE090 is stamped on the back. Please Help!

Welcome aboard

Good luck with this one, L drive was only made for about 2 years and parts are had to find. The power plant is a Force power head and lower unit but with a custom transom penetration. Have you googled L drive parts, should be able to get some hits? Harder to find item are for this custom transom assembly such as the bellows. Over the last few years there has been folks like you who have bought one of these and asked questions and even got it running but they shortly disappeared.

I would first inspect the bellows and other items that may be bad and see if you can find a parts source before putting any more money into it. Then look for a L drive or Force manual to help troubleshoot.

Default Might just part it out

Well shucks, might just part it out then take it to the landfill and build a utility trailer with the trailer.

I like your determination. I would inspect the bellows where the lower unit articulates to tilt up for cracks and look to see if you can still get one otherwise the boat will take on water and sink.

Got it started!! Had to keep hold of choke and keep it floored. Did that before checking impeller. Started to hear a beeping noise. Googled that and read it might be a code for overheating of Motor. Going to try to find out where impeller is to see if it is bad and not getting water to the motor.

Was water exiting the center of the prop with the exhaust gases or any other location? Being an outboard power head I would think the impeller is in the lower unit just like any other outboard or Mercruiser Alpha drive.

Yes there was a lot of white smoke and water was coming out at one point. Then I noticed a black boot up and under that is attatched with a clamp on the right side had become disconnected. Shortly after that I noticed oil splattered on the underneath behind this black boot. This also is when the beeping sound started. I reattached the boot but think i should learn a little more about how this l-drive works before i cause some real damage. Not sure how to post pictures on here yet to show the oil splatter and boot.

I suggest you find a manual. I have seen a few used ones out there for about $45.
